Elementary to Advanced Level
ABOUT THE COURSE
General English (ELICOS) helps adult international students build practical English for everyday communication, community participation and life in Australia. Across five levels from Elementary to Advanced, students develop speaking, listening, reading and writing, supported by vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation practice.
Students may enrol at the level appropriate to their current English proficiency. AIA uses placement information and assessment to support the starting-level decision and identify learning needs.
General English may also support students who plan to continue to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or further study. Entry into any VET or other course remains subject to the current entry requirements for that course, applicable government requirements and AIA’s assessment.
General English is a non-AQF ELICOS course delivered across five English proficiency levels.

Duration
Up to 58 weeks including scheduled breaks. Each level includes 10 study weeks.
Entry and Placement
General English is available to adult international students who meet the following requirements:
- Students must be 18 years of age or older at the time of course commencement.
- Students must have successfully completed Australian Year 12 or an equivalent qualification.
- Students commencing at Elementary level do not require prior English-language knowledge.
- Students seeking entry to a higher level must demonstrate English proficiency appropriate to that level through accepted evidence and/or an AIA placement assessment.
AIA may use placement information and assessment to confirm the most suitable starting level and identify any learning support needs.
Who is this course for?
This course is for students who want to improve practical English for everyday communication, community participation, work-related situations or future English-language study.
How do students progress?
Progression to the next level is based on achievement of the learning outcomes for the level being studied. Students receive regular feedback to help them understand their progress.
Planning for VET study?
AIA generally uses the Advanced level as the ELICOS pathway point for students seeking to progress to VET study. Completion of a level does not guarantee admission. Entry remains subject to the chosen course requirements, applicable government requirements and AIA’s assessment.
Assessment, Progress and Mode of Delivery
General English assessment and progress
Assessment is part of the learning process. It helps students and teachers monitor progress, recognise strengths and identify areas that may need more attention.
- Weekly tests: grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening activities connected to the level being studied.
- Writing portfolio: regular writing tasks linked to weekly themes, with constructive feedback.
- In-class assessment: speaking and other language skills assessed through normal classroom activities.
Mode of delivery
Each level includes 10 study weeks with 20 hours of face-to-face classroom delivery and 5 hours of recommended self-study each week. Classroom learning may include group work, discussions, audio and video materials, presentations, role plays and practical language activities.
