Changes to English Language Requirements for International Students in Australia

Dear AIA Community,

We would like to inform you of recent updates issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) regarding changes to English language requirements for international students in Australia. These changes aim to enhance the educational experience of international students and recent graduates, while also supporting Australia’s economic growth.

Key Changes to the International Students coming to Australia to pursue their further studies:

Student Visas

  • The minimum English proficiency requirement for a Student visa has been raised from International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 5.5 to 6.0 (or equivalent).
  • The minimum score required to undertake a packaged English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) course has increased from IELTS 4.5 to 5.0 (or equivalent).
  • Students enrolled in recognised university foundation or pathway programs that offer reputable English language training must achieve a score of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent). These recognised programs will be listed on the Department’s website.
  • There will be no change for students studying English exclusively through ELICOS.

These changes will apply to all Student visa applications lodged on and after 23rd of March 2024.

We understand the importance of staying updated with regulatory changes and we are committed to supporting our international students through these transitions.
